An alternative view on SharePoint

Lately, there has been a discussion going on about SharePoint.

Question is: does SharePoint suck or not??

My opinion before I present you with views from both sides?

Just look at blogs and wikis to see that SharePoint isn’t exactly the best solution to everything.

Also the SharePoint marketing machine really only benefits Microsoft. It is a great platform, but not a solution out of the box.

Even software based on SharePoint like Scholaris makes it clear that it is… Continue

Countdown to SharePoint 2010

The SharePoint Conference 2009 is rapidly approaching, only 10 days left. Probably the public beta of SP2010 is going to be released at that Conference, so we're really getting anxious now...

Veronique Palmer added a nice little blog post on EndUserSharePoint.com that you can find here. I couldn't have said it better myself. Here's a little recap...…

World Teachers' Day

A bit late, but yesterday was World Teachers’ Day.

UNESCO designated October 5th annually as World Teachers' Day to mark the anniversary of the 1966 signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers which addresses teacher policies, rights and responsibilities.

If you want to share your ideas with Microsoft on Teaching and Technology, you can express that… Continue

Microsoft Security Essentials released

Microsoft Security Essentials (formerly codenamed Morro) is here.

The best news is it’s free.

It works on Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

MSE is built on Microsoft Forefront Client Security (FCS) technologies. It’s a malware detection and restoration security client. It is compatible with Windows 7 and backwards to Windows XP SP2. It’s hard to find a security product that is ready for Windows 7 right… Continue

Follow us on Twitter

I have created a Twitter account - SPforSchools - so you can follow us there as well.

But hey, we're on a SharePoint blog right, so why not put your twitter account on a SharePoint site (or why not the SPforSchools account ;-)) as the picture above shows...

Here is how to do it;

* log on to your Twitter account

* go to the bottom of the home page and select 'Goodies'…

Some hot gossip on SharePoint 2010.

First of all, please note that these are only rumours you can find on other blogs or sites. This certainly is NOT official information!! The official information (and public beta) will start to flow from the SharePoint Conference onwards (end October).

WARNING: TECHNICAL CONTENT AHEAD

Here is a summary of what will be explained further below - so you won't have to read the technical… Continue

Office Web Apps Enter Technical Preview

Last Thursday, Microsoft officially opened the technical preview program for the much anticipated Office Web Apps to a limited number of invitation-only participants. These services are now offered via Windows Live Skydrive, but will also be offered via SharePoint 2010.

Office Web Apps will allow students to collaborate in real-time across a wide variety of experience types, whether it’s editing assignments in Word at a library computer or the ability… Continue

Customising the Portal at All Saints' College

I thought I could share some of the stuff we have done here at All Saints' College. I had shown our portal site at ELH and I know Bart has uploaded my presentation. I was in the position last year at ELH of looking for affirmation that I was developing effective strategies to move All Saint's forward with the portal. Some of the strategies I discussed at the presentation were not in PowerPoint.

Food for thought...

When I started on the job my focus was on creating as many… Continue

SharePoint 2010 @ TechEd 09

Last week I spent a couple of days in sunny Queensland for the Microsoft TechEd conference. It was very interesting and saw a lot of new technologies and demos. (Windows 7 seems to be a winner!).

On the SharePoint side of things however, it was a bit disappointing. On SP2010, Microsoft keeps everything under NDA and they obviously only want to start revealing features at their SharePoint Conference end October in Las… Continue

Connecting Web Parts

Yesterday at the Scholaris LMS training, Laurie Brooker (the trainer) showed the use of adding columns to a list to display some meta data that would make it easier to read through the list.

Further on that, I would like to point that there other mechanisms to filter views or make it easier to find the data you want in a big list or data scattered over several other lists and libraries.

On such mechanism is to connect web parts and filter values in other web parts on the same… Continue
